Caves of Rethymno Crete
The prefecture of Rethymno is dotted with caves and other hollow natural formations. The Νο
of these, however, is easy to be reached and the visitor - apart from the required experience
- is advised to arrange the necessary equipment and a source of light.
The "Sfentoni" cave in Zoniana: n terms of natural beauty it is the most spectacular cave Ι
in Crete. It has 14 chambers and is 145 m long. It can be visited and sufficient light is
provided.
The Melidoni Cave: It has 6 chambers and is 140 m long. It has been used since the
Minoan period and in 1823, 370 people died tragically in the cave besieged by the occupying
Turkish army. It can be visited and sufficient light is provided.
The Idaion Andron cave: According to legend the birthplace of Zeus. In successive
excavations a number of ancient findings have been made, which prove human use of the
cave from Neolithic to early Christian times. Parts are open to the public.
The Gerani cave: A small, but impressive in its natural beauty, cave which unfortunately
cannot be visited by the public.
The "Ghost-cave" in Prinos: ne of the most beautiful caves in Crete, whose access is, Ο
however, extremely difficult. The prefecture of Rethymno is a paradise for walkers and
hikers, provided sufficient experience and the necessary equipment.
