Preveli Monastery
Located within the prefecture of Rethymno towards to the south coast of Crete,
Preveli Monastery can be found with the most superb panoramic view over the
Libyan Sea.
It is said to date back to the 16th century which can be seen from an engraved date
1594 on a bell within the monastery. It was probably founded by a feudal lord known
as Prevelis during the Venetain occupation when the Turks had occupied Crete.
It is considered the most sacred part of the Holy Diocese of Lambis and Sfaklion. It
was an extremely wealthy monastery with a large real estate property in Crete. The first
Greek school was founded there in 1831.
It also played a large part in the rebellion of the Turkish occupation as with most of
Crete's monasteries.
During the German occupation when the Germans met a threatening opposition against
the Allied Forces and the people of the island, Preveli Monastery when choosing to
be faithful to it's traditions and had no other options to help, decided to arrange on
a daily basis to give supplies to the Allied Army and the locals.
Many Allied soldiers were sheltered here after World War II, The Battle Of Crete
in 1941 before being evacuated to Egypt.
