Rethymno Town
Rethymno is situated towards the western side of the Island of Crete between the
two larger cities Herakleio and Chania where the two largest airports are situated on
Crete. Each main city can be reached in approximately 1 hour by road and from both
main harbour areas you can connect to the mainland of Athens via overnight ferry
or with the faster connection in about 4 hours. For details check with
www.aneklines.gr Alternatively with a short domestic flight to the mainland via one
of the local airline companies.
Rethymno town boasts so much history dating back to the prodominant Venetian
and Turkish occupation. Much evidence of this had been discovered as Rethymno
was lucky enough not to be bombed so badly during the second World War in
comparison to Heraklion and Chania. The buildings that remain may not be as quite
important as alternative monuments around the island but none-the-less there is
much beauty and architectural tastes to be found around the old town of
Rethymno.
Within the back streets of Rethymno town, old decorative doorways can be
discovered, ornate fountains and of course the Turkish Mosques that still remain.
There are now five out of eight still standing that are in the process of being
restored and preserved to be put for various uses.
With it's charming setting, meandering narrow back streets and old Venetain
harbour, surrounding the vast Fortezza, Rethymno has a great advantage over
many other tourist attractions and has taken a huge step forward in consistantly
attracting holidaymakers for return visits for what Rethymno has to offer.
The Culture, the beautiful scenery, the superb Cretan Cuisine and off course most
importantly the allure & charm of the Greek people and their unbeatable
hospitality.
